Philosophy 101 - The nature of Existence Course
Prerequisites: none
Why are we here? What is it the great creator has in store
for us? These are age old philosophical questions that have
been pondered by brains great and small since the beginnings
of time. Philosophically, these answers vary quite a bit from
each other. I may believe I am here to help singles find true
love, you might believe you are here to write the great
American novel, and your friend Denise might believe she is
here to save the world from hunger. No easy answers then,
right?
At the genetic level though, it becomes much easier. All
creatures exist to propagate their species. That's it. Simple
no? To do this though, we must survive. So survival becomes a
necessary component of propagation. Survival includes a whole
host of things like food, shelter, and so on. Propagation
includes sex, having babies, and raising them until they can
survive on their own.
So, at the genetic level at least, we are all driven to
survive and propagate. It is our true calling, our absolute
base reason for living. And if you consider it, propagation
and survival are the root causes for most everything we do in
life. We go to school, get a job, make money so we can
survive long enough to accomplish our genetic purpose of
making more humans. We couple, we date, we marry just so we
can propagate.
Apparently, philosophers should have spent more time
propagating and less time thinking about higher
purposes...
